NZQF Qualifications Explained

What is an NZQF Qualification?

The New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) is the national system that formally recognises and records qualifications and credits earned at different levels of learning. It ensures that the skills and knowledge you gain are acknowledged consistently across New Zealand. Qualifications on the NZQF are approved by NZQA (the New Zealand Qualifications Authority), and developed by approved education providers who deliver quality training aligned with national standards.

In the past, New Zealand’s real estate industry operated with less formal regulation around who could act as a Licensed Salesperson or Agent, despite property transactions being among the most significant financial decisions people make. Recognising the importance of professional standards, the government introduced the Real Estate Agents Act 2008, which established the regulatory framework for licensing and conduct in the real estate sector.

Under this Act, the Real Estate Authority (REA) was formed to oversee licensing, regulate conduct, and protect consumers by ensuring all agents meet minimum educational and ethical standards. Since then, the educational requirements for entry into the profession have been clearly defined.

Level 4 Certificate in Real Estate (Salesperson)

To become a Licensed Salesperson in New Zealand, candidates must complete the NZQA Level 4 New Zealand Certificate in Real Estate (Salesperson), which includes both theoretical study and practical workplace experience. This programme equips learners with essential skills and knowledge to work competently under the supervision of a licensed agent.

The Level 5 Certificate in Real Estate is an advanced qualification designed for real estate professionals who want to deepen their expertise, take on greater responsibility, and progress their careers within the property industry.

Who is it for?

This qualification is ideal for Licensed Salespersons aiming to become Licensed Agents or Branch Managers, or those already working as Licensed Agents who want to formalise their knowledge and skills at a higher level.
